SCREENTOCARE BY MAMACARE360
Doula Guide
Version 1.2. Effective October 9, 2026.
In a crisis: If a client says she's thinking about harming herself or her baby, help her call or text 988. If she's in immediate danger, or seems confused, sees or hears things others don't, or seems out of touch with reality, call 911. For 24/7 support from trained counselors, she can also call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-TLC-MAMA (1-833-852-6262).
About this guide
This guide explains how ScreenToCare works and shares resources some doulas find helpful. It's general information only. It isn't training, certification, clinical guidance, or legal advice, and it doesn't set a standard of care for your work.
You decide how to support each client, using your own training and judgment, the scope of practice and standards of your certifying organization, and the laws where you work. Nothing in this guide changes your responsibilities to your clients, and nothing here makes ScreenToCare or MamaCare360 part of her care team.
What ScreenToCare is, and isn't
ScreenToCare is a self-screening tool. Your client answers validated questionnaires on her own phone. Her phone scores them and shows her resources. ScreenToCare:
- doesn't diagnose, treat, or give medical advice
- doesn't see her name, answers, or results
- doesn't monitor screenings, alert anyone, or follow up with her
- can't tell you or anyone else whether she's safe
A screening result isn't a diagnosis. A low score doesn't mean she's fine, and a high score doesn't mean she has a condition. Only a licensed clinician can assess her.
How it works for your clients
You share your ScreenToCare QR code with your client. She scans it, answers the questions in a few minutes, and sees her results and suggested resources. Her name and answers stay on her phone. If she chooses, she can send her results by email from her own account to you, to her OB, midwife or pediatrician, or to anyone else.
Whether she screens, and whether she shares her results, is her choice. You aren't responsible for screening her, and ScreenToCare doesn't expect you to review, score, or interpret her results.
If a client shares a result with you
These are general suggestions, not required steps. Use your own judgment.
- Safety first. If she mentions thoughts of harming herself or her baby, or seems confused or out of touch with reality, use the crisis resources at the top of this guide.
- Listen. Thank her for telling you. You don't need to have answers.
- Connect her with her provider. Encourage her to contact her OB, midwife or pediatrician, and offer to help her make the call or send her results. A licensed clinician is the right person to look at her results.
- Share support options. She may also find these helpful: Postpartum Support International peer support groups in her state, or a perinatal mental health counselor at psidirectory.com. The PSI HelpLine (1-800-944-4773) offers support and connection to resources. It isn't a crisis line.
Things to avoid
- Don't interpret her score or tell her what it means medically.
- Don't tell her she'll be fine, or that it's "just the baby blues."
- Don't present ScreenToCare as a substitute for her provider or for emergency services.
Keeping her results private
Most doulas aren't covered by HIPAA, but your client is trusting you. Keep any results she sends you private. Don't share them without her permission, except when needed to get her help in an emergency. Delete them when you no longer need them to support her.
Third-party resources
The crisis lines, hotlines, directories and support groups in this guide are run by independent organizations. ScreenToCare doesn't operate, control, or guarantee them, and listing them isn't an endorsement. Phone numbers and services can change. Check them yourself before relying on them.
